Quick answer

For most visitors without a Vietnamese bank account, an international card plus some VND cash is the simplest starting point. Add QR payment when your existing app supports the merchant. If you already hold USDT or USDC, BKJ describes a Scan to Pay route for supported merchants, with local-currency settlement. Its use still depends on account eligibility, merchant support and applicable rules.

Choose by the purchase in front of you

Use a card for a hotel or restaurant that accepts it, and keep cash for purchases where card payment is unavailable. Vietnam Tourism identifies hotels, tour operators and established shops as common card-accepting businesses, while small purchases and street vendors often remain cash-based.

Opening another account is useful when it fills a real gap. If your card and cash already cover the trip, you do not need to buy stablecoins simply to add another payment app.

A QR logo does not identify the payment route

An overseas app needs a supported connection to the merchant’s payment service. A scanner that reads the image cannot necessarily pay it. Before relying on your usual app, look for its Vietnam payment support and ask the merchant whether that service is accepted.

For BKJ, the deciding condition is the merchant channel. Its QR payment instructions cover platform-certified merchant codes. An unsupported-merchant message means the merchant has not activated the platform channel. At that point, choose another accepted method rather than treating every VietQR code as interchangeable.

Where BKJ fits an existing stablecoin balance

BKJ Scan to Pay describes purchases funded with USDT or USDC while the merchant receives local fiat. For an eligible user with an existing balance and a supported merchant, this can avoid a separate cash-exchange stop for that purchase. It does not replace the VND you need for cash-only sellers.

Cryptoassets are not lawful payment instruments in Vietnam. The State Bank’s explanation distinguishes virtual currencies from lawful payment instruments, and the non-cash payment rules prohibit unlawful instruments. Merchant receipt of VND alone does not establish authorization for a provider or conversion arrangement. Confirm that the offered route is permitted for your use before funding it.

Keep checkout separate from bank remittance

A request to credit someone’s bank account is a different task from a merchant checkout. BKJ’s remittance instructions require recipient bank details and a declared purpose. Only consider that route if it is offered to your account and accepts the actual recipient and purpose; an unsupported QR code is not a reason to switch to remittance.

Before departure, choose your main payment method and keep an independent backup. For a supported BKJ merchant purchase, use the VietQR payment guide to review the bill and final debit. If a payment is still confirming, resolve its status before paying the same bill again.
