Quick answer
Tourists can use parts of Vietnam’s local payment environment without opening a Vietnamese bank account, but the route depends on where their money is held. International cards use card acquiring, cross-border QR uses a participating overseas ecosystem, and stablecoin QR uses a verified digital-asset balance connected to a local payment channel.
These routes can look similar at checkout, yet their eligibility, fees, acceptance and dispute processes are different.
| Route | Funding source | Local account | Main constraint |
|---|---|---|---|
| International card | Home bank or credit line | Not normally required | Issuer and merchant acceptance |
| Cross-border QR | Eligible overseas app | Not normally required | Participating region, app and acceptance point |
| Stablecoin-funded QR | Supported digital assets | Not required for BKJ route | KYC, asset, code and account compatibility |
| Local wallet | Local wallet funding rules | Often relevant | Onboarding, identity, phone and funding requirements |
Card acceptance is familiar but not local-wallet access
A foreign card is often the easiest route at hotels and established retailers. The transaction remains a card payment, so issuer controls, merchant acceptance, foreign-exchange treatment and DCC still apply.
A card does not unlock bank-transfer features or local wallet functions. Keep the distinction clear when a merchant displays both a card terminal and a bank QR code.
Cross-border QR depends on participating ecosystems
NAPAS has expanded bilateral QR connectivity with several neighbouring markets and describes VIETQRGlobal as a participating acceptance network. Eligibility comes from the linked overseas app and corridor, not from being a tourist in general.
Confirm that your app, country and merchant are part of the live corridor. A familiar QR logo is not enough because domestic VietQR, VietQRGlobal and product-specific QR flows have different operating rules.
Stablecoin QR changes the funding source, not the merchant’s currency
A stablecoin-funded QR app lets an eligible user pay from supported digital assets while the merchant receives local fiat. The merchant is not required to manage USDT or USDC.
BKJ states that verified users can scan supported VietQR merchant codes, review the VND amount, asset, fee and final debit, then approve. The operational test is the confirmation screen inside the official App.
Choose by eligibility and recovery path
Before relying on any route, verify account availability, identity requirements, funding, merchant compatibility, fees and the person responsible for refunds. Passing only one check does not prove the full payment flow works.
Keep cash or an independent card available. When a QR transaction is pending, review transaction history before paying again; when a purchase is cancelled, follow the merchant and platform’s stated refund process.
What to do next
Tourists can approximate local convenience, but only through an eligible payment rail. Compare the complete route, not the QR symbol: funding, verification, merchant settlement, fees and recovery all matter.
