Quick answer
You do not automatically need US dollars to obtain Vietnamese dong. If a bank or authorised counter accepts your existing currency, compare a direct exchange with buying dollars first. The dollar route adds another conversion, which must earn back its cost through a better final VND payout or access to a usable exchange service.
Check whether your currency has a cash quote
HSBC Vietnam’s exchange-rate page lists cash-buying rates against VND for currencies including British pounds, euros and Australian dollars. At 08:35 on 10 September 2026, its reference figures were 34,221 VND per GBP, 29,536 per EUR and 18,214 per AUD. These establish that dollars are not the only currency quoted; they are not guaranteed transaction prices.
Use the cash-buying column when selling banknotes. A transfer rate does not establish that the same currency is accepted as cash. Confirm the specific branch, banknote requirements and final payout before travelling there. HSBC’s FX service guidance also requires identification; do not assume a displayed rate removes account or documentation conditions.
Compare both conversions before buying dollars
Start with the same amount of your existing currency. For the direct route, request the final VND after charges. For the dollar route, first find the net USD you would receive at home, then obtain a VND quote for that exact USD amount. Include charges at both stages and the cost of reaching each counter.
A favourable USD-to-VND quote cannot, by itself, prove the two-stage route is cheaper. You also paid to acquire those dollars. Compare offers from a similar time, and refresh the second quote if the transactions happen on different days.
| Your starting position | Useful decision |
|---|---|
| Your currency has a confirmed cash offer | Compare its final VND with the complete dollar route. |
| Only a transfer quote is visible | Confirm cash acceptance before bringing banknotes. |
| No accessible counter accepts your currency | Compare obtaining USD with another available cash route. |
| You already hold USD | Compare direct USD-to-VND offers; another currency is unnecessary unless the full quote justifies it. |
Separate cash needs from purchases you can pay directly
A cash-only purchase still needs VND notes. For other spending, ask whether the merchant accepts your existing card before arranging either cash route.
BKJ publishes this guide. If you already hold USDT or USDC, BKJ Scan to Pay describes a supported merchant-payment route with local fiat received by the merchant. For eligible accounts and supported purchases, this may avoid obtaining dollar and VND banknotes. BKJ’s QR instructions limit support to merchants with the platform payment channel enabled.
This is not a banknote exchange service or a reason to buy stablecoins solely for a trip. Funding and payment costs still matter. Vietnam’s central-bank journal explains that cryptoassets are not lawful payment instruments. Merchant receipt of VND alone does not prove a provider’s authorisation; confirm legal availability before relying on the service.
Choose the route before choosing the counter
Keep your existing currency when a suitable direct offer meets your needs. Buy dollars only when the complete comparison or confirmed cash access supports that extra step. For the location decision, see where to exchange money in Vietnam.
