Quick answer
A Vietnamese bank account is not required for most visitor spending. Use an international card at established merchants, keep a modest VND reserve for small or offline purchases, and add a QR route only when the payment app recognizes the live merchant code.
For a verified traveler who already holds supported USDT or USDC, BKJ QR Payment can provide that local QR layer at compatible VietQR merchants. It does not replace cash for unsupported codes or a card for hotel preauthorizations.
Four routes for visitors
| Route | What you still need | Best role | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| International card | Active card, issuer approval and merchant acceptance | Hotels and established merchants | Fees, DCC, decline or surcharge |
| VND cash | ATM or exchange access and secure storage | Small or offline purchases | Withdrawal, exchange and loss risk |
| Cross-border QR | Eligible overseas app and participating corridor | Supported VietQRGlobal points | Not every app or code is connected |
| BKJ QR Payment | Verified BKJ account, USDT or USDC and recognized code | Supported local QR purchases | Account, code, limit and network conditions |
Vietnam Tourism says cards are generally accepted at established businesses while cash remains common for smaller purchases. See the official currency and payments guide. Acceptance still depends on the actual merchant and payment rail.
No local account does not remove onboarding
A foreign card uses your home issuer. Cross-border QR uses an eligible overseas app. Stablecoin QR uses a verified digital-asset account. Before travel, complete identity checks, enable overseas card use, fund the intended account and save an official support route.
Downloading an app or seeing a QR logo does not prove that the payer, merchant and payment route are compatible.
Use the live code as the test
A compatible QR flow should identify the merchant, show the VND amount and present a normal confirmation screen. If the app does not recognize the code, use a card or cash backup. Do not replace the checkout with an unknown transfer address or a personal QR image.
Where BKJ fits
The current BKJ VietQR guide describes this flow:
1. Register in the official BKJ App and complete KYC.
2. Fund the account with a supported USDT or USDC route.
3. Scan the live merchant code inside BKJ.
4. Confirm the merchant, VND amount, 1% fee and final stablecoin debit.
5. Approve only when every field is correct.
The merchant receives local fiat through the local payment channel. BKJ is a useful route when the traveler already holds supported stablecoins and the live total is competitive with available card or cash options.
Keep independent backups
Carry a modest VND reserve and a card from a separate issuer or payment rail. If the primary and backup both depend on the same phone, app and data connection, one failure can disable both.
Eligibility, fees and payment-network connectivity can change. Confirm the current service and final amount before authorizing payment.
